My Values

GROWING UP

Growing up in Thatcher’s Britain was a struggle. Tory choices caused an economy of despair - recession and high unemployment, inflation and interest rates. And I’m seeing it happen all over again. My values were shaped by that experience and by my parents. Dad was an electrician and then a trade union official. Mum was a seamstress, doing skilled manual labour that was low paid and undervalued, because it was seen as women’s work. They worked hard to give me and my brother a better life.

MY STORY

I was lucky enough to be the first in my family to go to university. I then qualified as a Chartered Accountant. Pursuing a career in finance and management in healthcare and technology. I now run a clinical trials company. I’m father to a son and two daughters. Throughout the last 30 years of building my career and raising a family, I’ve campaigned for Labour.

Although much of my life has been spent in Enfield, for the last 10 years I’ve come to know and love North West Norfolk, spending time here with my partner who grew up in Hunstanton and now lives just outside King’s Lynn.

You don't need me to tell you that residents deserve much better representation than the current Tory MP. I know that much just from talking with our friends and family locally. But I can see it too for myself, whether I’m in King’s Lynn or Hunstanton, Castle Acre or Brancaster, it’s clear that North West Norfolk needs an effective voice to speak out for change.

THE PORTILLO MOMENT

I’ve helped deliver two shock wins that changed the political landscape. Unseating Michael Portillo in 1997 in Enfield Southgate – maybe you were still up for it – and 20 years later, kicking another Tory out of the same seat, helping to deny Theresa May a parliamentary majority. A shock win for Labour in North West Norfolk could give a Labour government an overwhelming majority and a strong base to deliver the change that our country needs.

EXPERIENCED POLITICIAN

I’ve supported and campaigned for the Labour party in every election since I was a teenager. From door-knocking to campaign planning and promoting successful local and parliamentary candidates as their election agent. I’ve been a Councillor since 2018 and served as Cabinet Member for Finance in the Labour-controlled Borough of Enfield.
